About Thursday Night Kirtan
Join us for an exciting, blissful, meditative, and enlightening Kirtan Program, every Thursday 6:30-7:30 PM! Kirtan uses live music and chanting mantras using a call-and-response style with traditional instruments such as the harmonium (a cross between a keyboard and an accordion), veena or ektara (forms of string instruments), the tabla (one-sided drum), the mrdanga or pakhawaj (two-sided drum), flute and other woodwind instruments, and karatalas or talas (cymbals). One can attend as a beginner without knowing any chants or mantras and easily join right in!
Chanting is often part of the yogic system, used to enhance the psychological benefits of the body and mind and fostering a strong mind-body connection. It will open all the chakras and elevate our consciousness with its hypnotic, meditative effect.
Various mantras are chanted in the sound meditation. A mantra is a sound vibration that helps you control your mind. Adopting a mantra de-clutters our minds and removes unwanted and overwhelming thoughts. From ancient times, yogis, meditators, and spiritual practitioners were drawn to the practice of bathing in sound. We encourage you to do the same thing in the kirtan. It is easy, accessible, enjoyable, and healing. Through a simple chant and meditation process, we can improve our mood reduce our stress levels, and enhance our spirituality.
Kirtan is also popularly known as Sound Meditation/Sonic Therapy. Sonic Therapy uses music and sound to clear the mind and deepen meditation. This is an ancient practice followed by many traditions. Music is multi-dimensional, linking different realms of the brain, and facilitating meditation independently of thought. It can ease anxiety and promote a sense of well-being.
Sound is the source of creation. The only organ that will be always alert even during sleep is the ear. Many ancient traditions state that aural reception or hearing is the best method of learning and remembering.
Sound Meditation is a type of mindfulness meditation that uses sounds to focus the mind. The idea is that the sound will help anchor the mind in the present moment and allow you to let go of distractions.
Sonic Therapy is widely used in meditation centers and yoga classes. It brings us into a meditative state, where we draw inspiration by opening up to the different therapeutic tools/instruments of sound.
Through voice and instrument, we have cultivated a symbiotic link between the human body and sound since the beginning of time. Sound healing/sonic therapy is mentioned in all the ancient scriptures.
It is proven that sound meditation/kirtan will reduce stress and promote relaxation. It enhances our sleep quality and nurtures our well-being. It helps us increase our concentration and develop greater insight into reality. If you’re looking for ways to reduce stress and promote relaxation, sound meditation thru kirtan is worth trying!
