About Rev. Richard Malz:
Richard has been a Reiki Master for well over 25 years. Before then, he had always had been drawn towards bodywork massage to intuitively help friends and loved ones, which eventually evolved to moments where people who needed guidance somehow came across his path.
Richard's first recollection of channeling a message from Spirit was around 12 years old. Having a teacher in junior high school tell him about his life and his marriage, Richard can still see the look in his eyes, finding comfort in the messages Richard shared. To this day, he doesn’t remember what he said but can recall the teacher thanking him with emotion.
Studying different approaches to spirituality and healing has given Richard a well-rounded respect that honoring yourself while allowing that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs can be liberating. It gives one the freedom to work within a variety of modalities. In 1999, Richard was supporting his girlfriend at the time on a vision quest up in Big Indian, NY. They got to the longhouse early and there was a couple already there. A large man, Chief TueBear, and a plainly dressed scientist whom Richard now considers a sister, Ocie Wolffe, were sitting across from them. TueBear allowed Richard to help bring some feeling into his fingers with a Reiki treatment. Richard recounts, "I recall Ocie telling me that TueBear never let anyone work on him, as he happily felt the tingling of my work." TueBear’s eyesight was taken by diabetes and it was already taking away parts of his foot.
TueBear became Richard's guide and teacher for the next several years. At the end of that first weekend, Richard remembers calling him “my new old friend,” as their connection was just so strong. He was not Richard's first teacher, but he was the first who shared Richard's ability to see Spirit, without making him feel crazy. They shared visions and saw the same spirits. TueBear helped clear away some of the obstacles in his path and guided him towards honing his abilities even more.
On 9/11/01, Richard's life, along with the lives of so many others, changed. Born in Queens, New York, Richard always considered himself a New Yorker and especially so on that day. Richard was in the city two days later, after the city was on lockdown for a full day and a half, and wound up volunteering in the city for several months. He would call Chief TueBear to ask for guidance. TueBear was proud of Richard, and he and Ocie asked Richard to be a warrior.
Richard, TueBear, and Ocie traveled to and through many states as well as participating in Bearsong, a gathering of the Elders, in England in 8/2002. It was inspired by the late Grandfather Michael White Bear Walking, aka Michael Bromley, a Celtic Shaman. He and his wife at the time, Marish, were sources of inspiration. Richard was honored to be the Warrior for the Elders, where they spoke of peace in several venues, as well as participated in a Chanupa ceremony in the center of Stonehenge.
Richard was adopted by the southern Cherokee and associated bands in Texas, after several years of going there to participate in ceremony. Although his path is definitely thought of as a medicine man, Richard has always been reticent to use the word "Shaman," as he holds it in such reverence.
Over the years, Richard has continued to take workshops on techniques such as Integrated Energy Therapy as well as Cherokee Bodywork. He also has developed a few tools that he has successfully used in healing sessions through the years. Richard believes that every person is different, and they will be different every time you see them. So it’s important to work on the person in the time that you’re working on them, rather than having preconceived notions as to what they’re going to need.
